Preventing violent extremism

The Children’s Plan set out the importance of building cohesive and resilient communities and tackling the specific threat the UK currently faces from extremist groups prepared to use violence to achieve their aims.

Tackling violent extremism is not a new challenge for this country.  Past experience suggests that a security response is not enough and that we need to address the underlying causes to prevent people from being drawn into violent extremism.

The Government’s “Prevent” strategy recognises the importance of working with children and young people to build resilience to violent extremism and to protect those who are vulnerable.

As a result of feedback from teachers on the need for more practical advice, DCSF has developed a toolkit for schools available here: Learning to be safe: a toolkit to help schools contribute to the prevention of violent extremism.

Further details on the Government’s Prevent strategy and guidance to local partners on their role in working with local communities is also available on this website.
