Description	Statistics on cross border movement of secondary pupils in London are published in the statistical bulletin "School Destinations of Secondary School Pupils Resident in London Boroughs, January 2008". For the first time this Bulletin includes information about pupil inflows and outflows by school characteristic, pupil movement at the transition between year 6 and year 7, distance travelled and mode of travel. The latest statistics report on the period to January 2008 and update those previously released on 28 August 2007. The key points from the latest release are: Overall 77.9% of secondary pupils in London attend schools in the Local Authority in which they reside. This confirms the trend in recent years of increasing proportions of resident pupils attending schools maintained by their home borough with corresponding falls in the proportion of pupils attending schools maintained by other boroughs. In London there is a net outflow of pupils from their home Local Authority as they make the transition from year 6 to year 7. Inner London Local Authorities are net exporters, exporting 4,276 more pupils than they receive to both Outer London and elsewhere. 11 out of 14 Inner London Boroughs have higher proportions of resident pupils attending schools maintained by their home local authority than in 2002. Outer London Local Authorities are net importers, importing 617 more pupils than they export to both Inner London and elsewhere. 6 out of 19 Outer London Boroughs have higher proportions of resident pupils attending schools maintained by their home local authority than in 2002. 22.1% (16,373) of year six pupils in London move across Local Authority boundaries between year six and year seven (the transition from primary to secondary education). On average secondary pupils in London travel 1.5 miles to school. Pupils who attend schools within their home LA travel an average of 1.2 miles. Pupils who attend schools outside of their home LA travel an average of 2.9 miles.
